What is Domperidone used for?

Domperidone is used to:

• Relieve nausea and vomiting

• Treat bloating, feeling of fullness, or discomfort in the stomach

• Help with slow stomach movement (gastric motility disorders)

• May be prescribed to increase milk supply in breastfeeding mothers (off-label, under medical supervision)

How does it work?

Domperidone works by blocking dopamine receptors in the gut and brain. This speeds up stomach emptying and reduces nausea signals to the brain.

How do I take it?

• Usual adult dose: One tablet (10mg), taken 15 to 30 minutes before meals

• May be taken up to three times a day, depending on your doctor’s instructions

• Swallow whole with water—do not exceed recommended dose

Are there any side effects?

Common side effects:

• Dry mouth

• Headache

• Stomach cramps

Less common but serious:

• Irregular heartbeat (especially in older adults or high doses)

• Breast tenderness or milk discharge (due to hormonal effects)

• Allergic reactions (rash, itching, swelling)

Stop taking and consult your doctor if you experience any chest pain, palpitations, or severe dizziness.

Can I take this if I’m pregnant or breastfeeding?

• Pregnancy: Only if prescribed by a doctor

• Breastfeeding: Sometimes used to increase milk supply, but must be under medical guidance due to possible heart risks

Who should not take this?

• People with known heart rhythm problems (QT prolongation)

• Those with liver disease

• Patients taking medications that affect heart rhythm or interact with Domperidone (like certain antibiotics or antifungals)
