What is Metoprolol Tartrate used for?

Metoprolol Tartrate is used to:

  • Treat high blood pressure (hypertension)

  • Manage chest pain (angina)

  • Help prevent future heart attacks

  • Control irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia)

  • Reduce symptoms in patients with heart failure


How does it work?

It belongs to a class of drugs called beta-blockers. It works by slowing down your heart rate and relaxing blood vessels, which helps lower blood pressure and reduce strain on the heart.


How do I take it?

  • Usual adult dose: One tablet (100mg) once or twice daily, depending on your doctor’s advice

  • Take with or immediately after meals

  • Swallow whole with water—do not crush or chew

  • Take at the same time each day to maintain effect


Are there any side effects?

Common side effects:

  • Dizziness or lightheadedness

  • Fatigue or tiredness

  • Cold hands and feet

  • Slower heart rate

  • Upset stomach

Less common but serious:

  • Shortness of breath

  • Swelling of ankles or feet

  • Very slow heart rate

  • Depression or mood changes

Who should not take this?

  • Individuals with severe asthma or lung disease (may worsen breathing)
